Meath League Day 1

Well done to all our athletes who competed in the first night of the Meath League last night. We had a great turn out. Thank you to all who came out and supported the club gaining valuable points for the league table. Many thanks to all our volunteers on the night and during the day.

The 2nd league night takes place on Wednesday the 7th of March at 7pm and this will cover the ages of U10 60m & Long Jump, U13 & U16 60m & High Jump,
Once again only members of this age may compete on this night.

National Senior Indoor Championships

The club saw five of its athletes compete at the National Senior indoor championships on Saturday 17th and Sunday the 18th of February in the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown. Elizabeth Morland performed well across the board, taking the gold medal in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.43s, she also came fourth in the shot put with a throw of 11.64m. Shannon Sheehy narrowly missed out on the medals in the long jump with a jump of 5.60m to take fourth. Shane Joyce came sixth in the triple jump final with a jump of 13.26m. Michael O’Sullivan just missed out on the shot put final coming ninth with a throw of 9.76m. The club has a promising set of future senior athletes as all athletes were competing out of their age category with one athlete being a junior and the other three being Under 23.

Meath Awards

It was a great night of celebration in the Ardboyne Hotel Navan last night at the Meath County Athletics Board awards. It was wonderful for the athletes to receive awards for their achievements last year and it was also nice for their parents, families and coaches to share in the celebrations. Congratulations to all our award winners.

Elizabeth Morland had a great year in 2017 and was awarded Meath Athlete of the year. Along with all her other sporting success throughout the year she achieved a National Junior, U23 and Senior Outdoor Heptathlon Record with 5801pts in the European Junior Track & Field Championships in Grosseto, Italy in July 2017. In her acceptance speech on receiving the prestigious award she was very appreciative of the club, her clubmates, all the coaches and especially head coach Phelim Joyce.

Also on the international sporting scene Paul Keogan won an award for his achievements at the World Para Athletics Championships in London, in July 2017.

Our underage athletes James Bellew, Laura Bolster, Amy Callaghan, Mollie White, Aoife-Jane Lenehan and Zoe Mohan who won medals at National Championships in 2017 were presented with plaques.

There was more Cushinstown success in the Track and Field Awards with Laura Bolster and Loclainn Harris winning the award for the U11-13 Track while James Bellew won the award in U11-13 Boys field category. Mollie White won the award for the U14-16 Girls Track while Amy Callaghan won in U14-16 field category. Zoe Mohan won the award in the U17-19 field category.

In the Junior Track Elizabeth Morland won the award while Michael O’Sullivan won the Junior Field award and Donal Kearns won the Senior Track award.

A new award was presented this year and Mollie White was the worthy recipient of the Cathy Daniel Cup as Juvenile Track & Field Athlete of 2017.

Meath League Reminder

The Meath League will commence on Wednesday the 21st of February at 7pm in Cushinstown A.C. This year the league will run a little differently to previous years and will be divided in to two sections “Winter League” and “Summer League”. The Winter League will be divided into three nights all of which will be held in Cushinstown A.C.

The league nights are a good way of introducing competition to our younger athletes in a relaxed manner, and good competition experience for our older athletes.

We are asking for as much support as possible on the three nights being held in our club. Athletes may only compete on in their age group and may not move up or down a year.
