Leinster Championships

In the sweltering heat where umbrellas were needed to protect the athletes and dedicated supporters from the sun our members put in some great performances achieving some personal bests and a bagful of medals and progression to the All Ireland competition in July. In their first Leinster outing our youngest athletes, Sean Armstrong and Harry Gough came third in the U9 turbo javelin pairs competition, U11 pair Kevin Doyle and Jyles Gogan competed in the 600m and 60m race and were unlucky in both events, more to come from these talented boys. U12’s Eamon Armstrong ran brilliantly in the 60m sprint to win a silver medal, and was unlucky not to place in his long jump.   A fourth place finish in the high jump secures James Bellew his place in the All Irelands.   There were some other great performances from Isabella Gogan, Ellen Gough and Lee Callaghan, who put in strong performances but were very unlucky not to place on the day.   U13’s Laura Bolster ran superbly in the 60m sprint to win gold, but due to injury had to withdraw from her other events.  Ella Barry jumped brilliantly to win gold in the long jump and bronze in the 60m hurdles, while Loclainn Harris stormed through to win gold in the 60m hurdles.  U14’s Amy Callaghan was on fire claiming a hat trick of gold medals, coming first in the shot putt, javelin and high jump, where she jumped a championship best.  Also in the javelin, Emily McGreal claimed the bronze while Amy Bellew secured her place in the All Irelands with a fourth place finish.  Niamh Quinn threw a personal best to secure a silver medal in the discus with Amy Bellew claiming the bronze.  Mollie White ran a personal best in the 75m hurdles of 11.88 sec in the heats and went on to secure silver in the final, and a very tight 80m sprint finish secured her the bronze, with Abi Sheehy also running a very fast final in the 80m & 200m but just missing out on this occasion to medal.  Other great performances from Ava Purcell running the 200m and 800m which was very tough in the high temperatures and some great jumping in the long jump by Abi, and Niamh Cahill.  U15’s In a very strong field in the javelin Katie Lenehan came fourth, and went on the claim 3rd in the Shot Putt and 2nd in the discus with a personal best of 29.84m.  Aine O’Sullivan also competed well in Javelin and Discuss and was unlucky not to place.  U16’s Armelle Gallagher ran well in the 1500m in what must have been 26°C heat.  Orlaith Quinn came fourth in the high jump and jumped a personal best of 4.76m to come fifth in the long jump.  U17’s Aoife Lenehan threw a personal best in the discus of 29.14m to win the silver, in the shot putt she also won silver and came fourth in the javelin event.  In the U18 Hammer competition Zoe Mohan threw brilliantly, to claim the gold medal, and in the discus claimed the silver.   Well done to everyone that competed and thanks to all the parents and coaches for your continued support.
