Day 3 National Championships

Day 3 of the national juvenile indoor championships took place today in Athlone and we had five athletes competing on the day doing themselves and their club proud. Isabella Gogan jumped brilliantly in her newest event, the U13 long jump and just missed out on the medals coming 5th overall, no doubt we will be seeing Isabella excel at this event in the coming months. Roisin McManus was also in great throwing form qualifying for the last eight in the U14 shot putt and coming 6th overall. Loclainn Harris, Ella Barry and Mollie White were competing in the very competitive 60m hurdles. Unfortunately they did not get through to the finals but it was great experience for the upcoming outdoor season. Well done to them all.

Day 2 National Championships

Day 2 of the national juvenile championships took place today in the Athlone I.T. Arena. Despite the artic weather conditions, and fierce competition, our athletes competed very well and yet again did themselves and their club proud.

First up, Aoife Rohan set the bar very high in the U13 high jump winning the gold medal with a brilliant jump of 1.38m.  Lee Callaghan and James Bellew both jumped well in the U13 boys high jump but unfortunately were not able to match Aoife’s success this time. Amy Callaghan also jumped very well in the U15 high jump finishing in the top eight.  In the U15 shot putt Amy Callaghan claimed the bronze medal, while in the U16 shot putt Aine O’Sullivan threw a personal best of 9.58m with the 3kg shot to finish in eight position.  In the 60m sprints Isabella Gogan U13 ran very well and was unlucky not to get through to the final.  In the very competitive U17 long jump competition Orlaith Quinn performed brilliantly jumping 4.44m. Well done everyone.

Day 4 Leinsters Championships

Day 4 of the Leinster juvenile championships took place today in the Athlone I.T. Arena. The club was down in force with eleven athletes competing and doing themselves and their club proud returning home with a nice haul of nine medals. Well done to everyone. There were some great results and personal bests making a lot of mothers very happy on Mother’s Day. Unfortunately some of our athletes couldn’t make it because of illness and injury so we hope Niamh Quinn, Emily Mc Greal and Aine O’Sullivan are soon fully recovered.

Amy Callaghan was in winning form claiming the gold medal in the U15 shot putt, with Amy Bellew also throwing well and was unfortunate to just miss out on the medals coming 5th overall. In a tough U13 shot putt competition, Aoife, Ellen and Lee, all put in great performances with Lee making the top 8 but had already moved to his high jump.

With both high jump areas been used at the same time and space quite limited, in the U15 high jump Amy Callaghan jumped well to claim the silver medal.  James Bellew and Lee Callaghan both jumped very well in the U13 high jump to claim the silver and bronze medals respectively.  Aoife Rohan put in a great performance in the U13 high jump coming fourth which will see her battle it out at the Nationals in a weeks time.  In the U14 long jump Laura Bolster claimed the gold with a jump of 4.61m and Ella Barry won bronze with a great jump of 4.50m, nice to see that all top three were Meath athletes. Loclainn was unlucky to miss out on securing a place at the Nationals for the U14 long jump just missing out with a 5th place finish.

After a bit of a wait to get the hurdles started it was the U13’s up first.  Aoife Rohan was up first and this was her first time competing at this level in the hurdles she ran very well getting through to the final and coming 5th overall, again just missing out at a place at the Nationals.  Lee Callaghan also ran very well and having clipped his last hurdle, just missed out in getting through to the final.  U14’s up next and Ella Barry  flew over the hurdles getting through to the final and winning the bronze medal, with Loclainn Harris running a great race and also securing the bronze medal.  Due to illness, Mollie White was our sole representative in the U15 hurdles and ran brilliantly to get through to the final and claiming the gold medal.

Our youngest competitor today was Nia Hetherton who put in a great performance in the U12 long jump coming 9th in a very large group of 38 athletes. In her new event, Nia also jumped very well in the U12 high jump coming 6th.
